Crash Diets - Are they worth bothering with?

Is there a problem with Crash Diets? Isn't dieting a really frustrating exercise? Many of us need and want to lose weight.

So what’s the problem?

Well it’s something I call the human element. We all have our own individual traits and mine is willpower or more accurately, the lack of it! Hence many of us could do with a little help and encouragement to shed that weight.

One method that I have tried is going on a crash diet - and I've had a go at this a few times now. I've found that it works - but for me, it was a short term solution. There are some reasons for this
You’re effectively starving yourself. It's quite likely that you’re thinking of food a lot of the time - continuously thinking about what I could eat.
You feel lethargic, and can't focus at work - well this what I have found.
Then once you've lost the weight, you tend to celebrate by bingeing on food.
The other problem is that the body is not getting its right dose of vitamins and minerals. This doesn’t help with the feel good factor whilst on a crash diet. Your likely to be feeling a little listless.
In addition, whilst being on a crash diet, you lose more water, muscle as well as fat. So the weight loss is not quite ‘real’ if you see what I mean.
Your metabolism slows down – which doesn’t help with loosing weight for the long term.
Let’s face it – most of us know that to lose weight over the long term and keep it off, is to lose a small amount of pounds every week. Ideally this should be a couple of pounds each week. Oh yes, and you need that regular dose of exercise of 30 minutes over a period of 5 days. And if you’re in the position of working long days and commutes, this regime really has little chance of success – well I couldn’t do the exercises for sure. I was just too tired at the end of a 2.5hr commute back to home. But yet, I always had the nagging feeling that I should be exercising.
As I’ve said at the beginning, many of us could do with a little help and encourage to lose weight.

So to answer the question "Are crash diets worth bothering with?". First of all, I don't think there is a straight answer - sorry!. From my own personal experience, they can be worth the trouble for a short time to give you that confidence to continue to lose weight over a longer period of time, based on a rather more sensible regime.
